About
Vision
The MiSTEM Council called for a Math Action Area that works to “Elevate Mathematics as the language of STEM and a tool for STEM exploration.” Therefore, the Math Action Area seeks to create learning environments that produce more equitable outcomes for students such that demographic indicators (eg. race, gender, socioeconomic status, disability, sexual orientation, and zip code) are less predictive of student success in STEM by September 2026. We seek to engage educators, families, community organizations, and business & industry in authentic learning experiences that connect learning with career pathways.
Outcomes
As a result of statewide strategic planning in August 2022 where 55 STEM stakeholders convened to determine a vision for consortia work, the Math Action Area convened 25 stakeholders in April - August 2023 to refine the following outcomes as a vision for our work through 2026:
- Outcome 1: By 2026, in order to ensure ALL students - focusing on those who have been historically excluded - have relevancy, belonging, access, application, and support in math education, we will communicate a vision for culturally responsive mathematics pedagogy (CRMP) by creating a CRMP resource hub.
- Outcome 2: By 2026, in order to support students' foundational mathematics understanding, skills, and dispositions, we will increase by 20% the number of teachers trained to effectively teach Pk-5 mathematics.
- Outcome 3: By 2026, in order to build leadership capacity in the field, we will increase the number of regional groups/teams (ISD/RESA/Community) trained in implementing 3P pedagogy in 6th - 12th grade in schools/districts to over 16.
The Math Action Area has convened three working groups to support the outcome areas identified in the Math Action Area strategic plan. Leads for each workgroup will be identified to support developing leadership capacity for the work to move forward over the next three years. We are looking for partners in K-12, ISD/RESA, higher education, business & industry, and community.
